Government likely to reduce corporation tax to 25 per cent

With the Pre-Budget Report scheduled for Monday 24 November, BDO Stoy Hayward believes it is likely that the government will use tax cuts focused upon the business sector to ‘kick start’ the economy. This comes on the back of the 1.5 per cent base rate cut recently announced by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee.

'One in five shops may be closed by the end of the recession': PwC

According to a survey from PricewaterhouseCoopers, one in five shops may close by the time the economy recovers. The firm has estimated that 3,600 shops may be empty if 10 per cent of retailers get into financial problems in the next 12 months and it has said internet shopping and the growth of new shopping centres will exacerbate the problem

According to the latest monthly survey by PKF, rooms yield – the key industry measure of revenue – in Scotland’s hotels fell by 6.1 per cent in September against a UK fall of 3.9 per cent, a drop of 2.9 per cent in England and a fall of 11.7 per cent in Wales.

Company administrations shoot up 50 per cent from last year

The number of companies being placed into administration in the third quarter of the year was 50 per cent higher than during the same period last year according to statistics from the Insolvency Service. They show a total of 1007 companies were placed in administration in England and Wales in the last quarter, compared with 668 in the same period last year and 938 in the second quarter of this year
