The new president of ICAS takes over the reins today, with Glenn Allison assuming the role being vacated by Isobel Sharp

After serving two years as junior and then as senior vice-president, Stewart Milne Group MD, Glenn Allison, feels well prepared to step into the presidential role.

“The process of being involved in the last three years has been immensely useful, it’s allowed me to gain an insight into the main issues within the Institute, it’s allowed me to meet the people who I’m going to be engaging with within the other institutes and in the wider international field and it’s allowed me to be prepared for a lot of the issues which I’m going to face,” he told CA Mag online.

Allison also emphasised the role of the president in working with other accountancy bodies, both in the UK and around the world.

“The CCAB is working effectively. We have an understanding that we compete in terms of education, but there are also clear benefits to the profession from working together. We can speak with a stronger voice and get relevant arguments into the right places,” said Allison.

“There are a number of international bodies, which are there to serve a number of purposes, and we have to ensure that ICAS is involved and engaging with these bodies and has brand value that is recognised by these bodies that they want to engage with and work with and listen to what ICAS is saying in the debate about the future of the industry.”

Speaking to CA Mag online following her final event as ICAS president, the 20th anniversary of the publication of Making Corporate Reports Valuable, Isobel Sharp reflected on her year in office.

“The year has gone much better than I expected initially,” she said. “I had some apprehensions, but they were unfounded.

“I’ve been lucky to work with great people, have great support and great ideas, and we’ve made more progress than I thought we could in a year, and made progress in setting our strategy for the future in the Clearly Ahead document.

“We’ve also made progress in the Institute and its staffing and its projects and its business plans, that’s gone really well and getting Principles Not Rules accepted by groups all round the world has just been tremendous.

“So, I’ve had a great year and I’m really lucky to say ‘I’ve done it!’”
