Christina Aguilera meets Mark Knopfler, with a touch of Jimi Hendrix thrown in for good measure
Apologies for the lack of ‘blog action’ over the past couple of weeks. As usual, my attempts at spending two weeks doing absolutely nothing fell apart rapidly. Late nights in the office and a bit of weekend working to tidy up the pre-holiday loose ends set things off to a bad start, and made what followed all the more entertaining.
Saturday started things off in suitably bizarre fashion with my friend’s band inviting me on stage for a suitably flamenco-styled rendition of Christina Aguilera’s Genie In A Bottle, resplendent with Mark Knopfler-esque guitar solo from yours truly (No? Me neither), and a 15-minute blues jam in the style of Jimi Hendrix (in my head) or in the style of a man who had never even seen a guitar before (in the heads and ears of the audience).
Luckily for me, it was towards the end of the evening and the bar appeared to be full of liggers, drunkards and party animals and the show went down a storm. Moral of the story: For all you budding Noel Gallaghers out there, if you can’t play your instruments, make sure everyone watching is heavily intoxicated and they’ll think they were watching the mighty Mancs at Knebworth.
I did manage to catch the gig in London, although the free hangover which appeared to come with the ticket wasn’t quite so welcome. The same can be said for the Visa receipts and the £50 beer scooter fee which helped me back to South West London at 4 o’clock the following morning – the gig finished at 10:30?!
A similar affair the following evening (thankfully, nowhere near as late) leading to a rather impromptu a cappella version of Journey’s classic Don’t Stop Believin’ on the last tube home
I didn’t quite manage to watch the entire Scrubs back catalogue, having limped home with a miserly four series under the belt on return to the office.
The sun did shine for the most part which was all the more disappointing on the occasions when I was subjected to exam revision (industry exams this time rather than ICAS).
Thankfully the exams are now over, at least until the autumn, which means that I can now proceed with the difficult task of sifting through those last minute flight deals for a summer holiday destination.
