Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair

They say

“In this industry, the lowest-cost operator always wins. The era of low-cost travel is not over – it is the era of high-cost travel that is over.”

Michael O’Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, in defiant mood despite the unremitting rise in oil prices cutting into his budget airline’s bottom line.

We say

With the recent collapse of Eos, Maxjet and Silverjet, airlines which were targeted specifically at the business traveller, maybe it’s time to celebrate the survival of the budget airline, rather than complain about its no-frills service and lack of business class comforts. At least you can still take your briefcase on without paying an additional charge. A change of clothes is a different matter, however, and bring your own shortbread.

Have your say
